To mark the 15th anniversary of the Great East Japan Earthquake, Japan House London offers a special screening of the documentary film Stronger Than the Wave.
Produced in 2024, Stronger Than the Wave captures the rich coastal landscapes of the Tōhoku region while vividly illustrating how the Michinoku Coastal Trail was developed in the aftermath of the March 2011 earthquake and tsunami. Through interviews with those involved in building the Trail and local residents, the documentary reveals how the walking route has come to connect communities across the region, forming a nuanced picture of loss, fortitude and reconciliation during the recovery and reconstruction process.
The event also features an introduction by the director Robbie McKane.
About the Michinoku Coastal Trail
The Michinoku Coastal Trail is a long-distance walking trail designated by Japan’s Ministry of the Environment to support recovery from the Great East Japan Earthquake, which occurred on 11 March 2011.
This trail allows travellers to enjoy walks along an historic 1,000-kilometre path, mainly through the Pacific coastal region of northeastern Japan, stretching from Kabushima in Hachinohe City, Aomori Prefecture, to Matsukawaura in Soma City, Fukushima Prefecture, while taking in the beautiful coastal landscapes of the Tōhoku region.
It was designed as a space for remembrance, recovery, and renewed connection between people and place.
The screenings are in English and Japanese with English subtitles. Duration: approx. 89 mins
